5 things to do with your family before school starts again

August 25, 2025

The start of the school year is approaching, but summer isn't over yet! In Luxembourg, there are still plenty of family activities to enjoy until mid-September... and beyond. Here are our top 5 ideas for making the most of the end of summer with your loved ones.

Festivals, exhibitions, organized tours... numerous family events are planned in Luxembourg until the start of the school year to keep young and not-so-young alike busy before they return to school.

We have selected five activities for you to enjoy with your children, whether they are young or older. Choose from sports and culture, tradition and modernity, and make the most of the rest of your vacation! And if you have the opportunity, take advantage of one of these outings to share a drink or a meal with your family using your Pluxee Lunch Card.

1. Get your fill of thrills at the Schueberfouer

The Schueberfouer is the must-see family event at the end of summer in Luxembourg. As every year, the country's oldest fair will begin around Saint Bartholomew's Day and will welcome young and old alike from August 22 to September 10 on the Glacis field in Luxembourg City.

With its unique atmosphere, somewhere between an old-fashioned fair and a modern funfair, the Schueberfouer combines tradition and innovation. It offers attractions for all ages and tastes: Ferris wheel, flying chairs, ghost train, bumper cars, thrill rides... When it comes to food, there is something for everyone: Luxembourg specialties such as gromperekichelcher, a street food staple, as well as regional dishes such as fried fish and sauerkraut. For a sweet treat, children will not be disappointed: cotton candy, chocolate-covered fruit, candy, and other sweets will delight the little partygoers.

Every year, a special family day is organized, usually on the last Wednesday, with reduced rates.

2. Be amazed at the Parc Merveilleux

Parc Merveilleux is the ideal place to spend a day outdoors with the kids. In this magical world, visitors can discover all kinds of animals from near and far. The less shy ones, such as goats, can be petted and fed with food sold on site. A guaranteed hit with the little ones!

In addition to the animals, children can let off steam in the many playgrounds. Other attractions are available: a miniature train, mini cars, mini golf, and even a pony express.

It is also possible to eat on site, indoors or on the terrace, either at the park restaurant or the cafeteria.

Located in Bettembourg, the Parc Merveilleux is running every day until October, including Sundays and holidays, from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

3. Trying out tree climbing

Luxembourg's forests are an ideal playground for families. For a bit of adrenaline, why not visit one of the two adventure parks offering tree-top obstacle courses?

Le’h Adventure Park in Dudelange has more than seven courses and 100 activities, accessible to children and adults. Parents accompany their minor children either on the course or from the ground. Each course is classified by level of difficulty and accessible from a certain age. Toddlers can follow the bambini course (from around 2 years old) or the kid course (from 4 years old).

Steinfort Adventure Acrobranche offers 10 courses and 91 activities suitable for all ages from 4 years old: two courses for ages 4 and up (tiger and monkey), three for ages 7 and up, three for ages 10 and up, and two for ages 16 and up. As at Parc Le’h Adventure, parents must accompany their minor children.

Good to know: Birthday parties can be organized in both parks.

4. Learn about contemporary art at Mudam

For a cultural activity, and if the weather is unpredictable, a visit to Mudam, Luxembourg's contemporary art museum, will delight the whole family thanks to a varied program of exhibitions and events. The museum offers, among other things:

  • storytelling walks for children aged 4 to 6;
  • guided tours for children aged 6 to 12, with observation games and creative workshops;
  • Interactive tours designed for children visiting the museum with their grandparents.

A family activity book, Mudam Go, is available at the reception desk.

The Mudam is open every day except Monday.

5. Travel back in time by locomotive

On September 6 and 7, the Steam Festival will take place in Fond-de-Gras. It will celebrate the railway world of yesteryear with many vintage vehicles: steam locomotives, steam tractors, and more. Immerse yourself in the mechanical world of the past and admire the workings of a steam balloon blower or a sawing machine. Something to amaze the whole family!

During the weekend, creative workshops for children will be offered, as well as tours of the restoration workshops and an exhibition of model railways. For the occasion, the Minièresbunn mining train will run exceptionally above ground on a new loop route.
