Newcomers to Luxembourg: our tips for making connections

August 20, 2025

Moving to a new country means discovering a new language, embracing cultural practices that may be different, and getting used to unfamiliar customs. Social factors are key to successful integration. Meeting new people and making new friends: what a great way to start the new school year!

When you settle into a new country, the first few weeks are a mixture of excitement and various concerns. Once the main challenges of moving have been overcome, you can start exploring your surroundings, the culture, and the local population.

One thing is certain: Luxembourg is full of expats who are, or have been, in the same situation as you. What's more, the start of a new year is an ideal time to expand your social circle. To make new friends, don't hesitate to go out, visit the country's many bars and bistros, or take the time to eat with your colleagues, using your Pluxee Lunch card, for example.

Beyond that, everyone has their own tips for building relationships. Here are ours!

Learn Luxembourgish

By taking Luxembourgish classes, you will not only be able to communicate more easily with locals, but also learn more about the customs of the country and its inhabitants. By choosing a face-to-face course, you will meet people from a variety of backgrounds, some of whom are in the process of integrating, just like you. This will give you a common topic of conversation to explore.

The National Language Institute (INL) is a renowned organization that offers Luxembourgish courses in a variety of formats (face-to-face, blended learning, intensive, immersive, etc.). Many municipalities also organize language courses. All you have to do is find the one that suits you best, ideally close to where you live.

Join a gym

Sport is good for your health, and it's also a great way to meet people! If you used to play sports where you lived before, you can easily join a local club and start training again. And the icing on the cake is that Luxembourg's sports facilities are renowned for their quality.

Start by searching for existing clubs in your area through your local municipality. The City of Luxembourg, for example, provides a document listing all the sports clubs and associations in its territory. Registration generally takes place in September, so now is the time to get started!

Get involved as a volunteer

Giving a little of your time to an association can help you integrate and meet people. In Luxembourg, associations are an integral part of residents' lives: the country ranks fourth in Europe for the number of volunteers.

To find an association that inspires you, visit your local government website or the Volunteer Agency website, which offers a search engine with filters (area of activity, region, etc.).

Try out a workshop or class for adults

Do you have a passion you want to pursue or a desire to try your hand at a manual or artistic activity? It's a great way to meet new people. There is a wide range of activities on offer in Luxembourg: graphic arts, knitting, carpentry, upcycling, music, theater... You're sure to find something you enjoy and make connections with people who share your interests.

To find out about the workshops available, the website trouver-un-cours.lu can help you with your search. The Centre for the Promotion of the Arts and lifelong-learning.lu also offer a wide range of training courses.

Sign up for the Biergerpakt

The Biergerpakt (citizen pact), launched in 2024 by the Luxembourg authorities, aims to promote the intercultural integration of new arrivals. Free and accessible to all, it includes an orientation day, a language module, and a module to discover the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. This is a great opportunity to combine integration and meeting new people!

Membership of the Biergerpakt is voluntary. More information at biergerpakt.zesummeliewen.lu.
